India end 28-year wait to emerge world champions

Mumbai: It was an experience of a lifetime. To witness a host nation for the first time emerging as the ICC Cricket World Cup champions was indeed special.

Celebrations inside and outside the stadium were unbelievable. It was hard to make out whether it was day or night, as fireworks lit up the sky continuously through the night. Mumbai was undoubtedly glowing in the glory of India’s World Cup triumph after a wait of 28 years.

Every member of the team has etched their names in the history of the game, but after their victory they mingled with everyone to share the joy. The whole stadium was literally singing and dancing. A number of strangers hugged me on my way to meet the players and some were shedding tears of joy.

It was nice to see Sachin Tendulkar hugging his children Sara and Arjun, but he was whisked away from them by his teammates, who carried him around on their shoulder during the victory lap.

“For twenty one years he has carried the burden of the nation, it is time we carried him,” said Virat Kohli.  Sitting on the shoulders of Kohli and Suresh Raina, Tendulkar waved the Indian flag, but was also seen asking whether they were fine carrying him.

The blaring of horns and screams of joy from outside the stadium could be heard inside. Fans were allowed to carry whistles and so that went on non-stop.

Despite being the man behind the victory, coach Gary Kirsten preferred to remain in the background. But not for long, he was pulled out by his players and Suresh Raina carried him on his shoulders around the ground.

Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh could be seen wiping away their tears of joy. Sunil Gavaskar was seen touching the wicket and then touching his forehead. “It is a special mitti [soil], I am over the moon. What a win!” said the man who was part of India’s first World Cup victory in 1983.

Almost every player who was approached for their comments dedicated the victory to Tendulkar. “All credit to Tendulkar, we played for him,” Gautam Gambhir said. Zaheer Khan, who gave timely breakthroughs, too said pointing at Tendulkar: “It is for this special man.”

The team waved at superstars Aamir Khan and Rajnikanth who were there soaking the victory in the stands, and they waved back the Indian flag vigorously at the team.

Spectators refused to leave the stadium wanting to savour the taste of victory as long as possible and hence it was a struggle to leave the venue.

Outside the stadium it was a free for all with police watching all the action in silence. People sat on top of every car and even inside the bonnets waving the Indian flag and screaming in joy.

All bars were kept open till late night.. “Eat drink and be merry; we are the world champions,” remarked a fan inviting everyone to a restaurant.

One could feel over a billion hearts beating in joy over India’s victory as curtains came down on a great cricket tournament.

Earlier, India displayed the depth in their batting to pull off a sterling six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka with 10 balls to spare  in the final of 2011 International Cricket Council (ICCC) World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium.

It ended the country's 28 year wait to become the World Champions after they had done it in 1983 under the captaincy of Kapil Dev at the Lord's in England.

Wankhede provided the stage for another historic moment in world cricket.

Gautam Gambhir played the innings of his life to emerge as one of the greatest heroes of Indian cricket. Though he was dropped at 13 by Nuwan Kulasekara while India were tottering at 71 for 2, he fully utilised it to crack 97 runs off 122 balls studded with nine boundaries.

Dhoni, who promoted himself up the batting order despite struggling for form, played a classic unbeaten knock of 91 with eight fours and two sixes as if he had reserved his best innings for the final. At his score on 42 he went past the 6000 run mark in One-day cricket. He put on 109 runs in 19.4 overs with Gambhir to steer India to glory and virtually prove that he is the greatest Indian captain of all time by winning all the top tournaments for India under his leadership.

When India needed 52 more runs to win, Gambhir departed clean bowled by Thisara Perera for 97. Dhoni took charge and with Yuvraj Singh and steered India to the target. The victory run came from Dhoni's blade and that too a huge six over long on off Kulasekara.

Singh, who was later named player of the tournament, hit an unbeaten 21 runs. He had also took two vital wickets to once again prove as the man with the golden arm and India's best spinner of the tournament. With Dhoni, who was named man of the match, he put on unconquered 54 runs for the fifth wicket.

Defeat had virtually stared at India after Sri Lanka went on to post a mammoth 274 for 6 in 50 overs with Mahela Jayawardene playing a gem of an innings. He carried the Sri Lankan batting on his shoulders to remain unconquered on 103 off 88 balls with 13 boundaries.

Chasing a run rate of 5.48 runs per over required a whirlwind start from Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, but  Lasith Malinga removed both these danger men very early on. He trapped Sehwag for a duck and had Tendulkar caught behind to plunge the whole stadium into silence.

Gambhir and Virat Kohli took up the challenge and put on a fighting 83 runs partnership for the third wicket. The pair took the score to 114 with a partnership that lasted 93 balls and 69 minutes till Tillakaratne Dilshan had Kohli brilliantly caught and bowled for 35.

Dhoni joined Gambhir and virtually snatched the match out of Sri Lankan's hands backed by the cheers of 38,000 fans. Gambhir reached his half century and had waved his bat toward the commentary box to make a mockey of former Australian skipper Ian Chappell's remark that he does deserve a place in the Indian eleven.

Gambhir's innings virtually overshadowed Jayawardene fine ton. Through useful partnerships with all the top order batsmen, Jayawardene had carved out a great total for Sri Lanka. In the last ten overs from 183 for 5,  Sri Lanka accelerated their run rate with  66 runs for the sixth wicket in 8.1 overs with Nuwan Kulasekara (32) and a valuable 27 runs conquered partnership for the seventh wicket with Thisara Perera, who remained unbeaten with 22 runs off nine balls. In the last over Khan gave away 18 runs despite taking two wickets.  Jaywardene also had added 62 runs in 11.2 overs with his skipper Kumar Sangakkara.

Everything went in vain for Sri Lanka, including a memorable send off to Muttiah Muralitharan, who was playing his last One-day international match.
