Beware, your mobile may be bugged

MUMBAI: For reasons best known to him, Riyaz Ali could not come around to trusting his girlfriend Tasneem. The hopelessly insecure Ali lived every day of his life imagining Tasneem rolling in the hay with another man. Matters came to such a pass that he thought of hiring the services of a private investigator to keep tabs on her.

But the solution wasn't one that could last him a lifetime. Around that time, he confided in a friend of his who was, incidentally, a software engineer. Since then, Ali has slept easy. His friend showed him how to use Tasneem's cellphone to spy on every move she made and every word she uttered.

To do this, they started out by trawling through a few East European and Russian websites that do an extraordinary job of creating all kinds of spyware. What they settled on was an insidious bit of code that for all practical purposes is impossible to detect. It works like this.

After paying online, the software was downloaded onto Ali's phone. Next, they got hold of the IMEI number on Tasneem's phone. This is an unique number, pretty much like fingerprints, assigned by the phone manufacturer to each handset. Accessing this number is easy. Simply punch *#06# on the keypad and the number will show up. Alternatively, look under the battery compartment. Having done that, they punched Tasneem's IMEI number into the software loaded on Ali's handset. Using Bluetooth, they now loaded the software on Tasneem's phone. Ali was done.

Since then, Ali can listen in on every call that Tasneem makes or receives. For that matter, a copy of text messages originating and terminating from her phone is sent to him. And what Tasneem doesn't know is that Ali can even keep track of where she is. To prove the point to these writers, he called Tasneem and asked her where she was. She cheerfully replied, "Peddar Road." The software on Ali's phone corroborated what she said. He smiled, content.

"Snooping and hacking were familiar concepts on computers. But as phones get smarter and emulate the workings of a PC, the same tricks have become relevant to the mobile world," says Altaf Halde, country manager, India, Ultimaco Software, a security solutions company. What is scarier still is that there are providers falling head over heels to sell their wares to youeach promising more efficacy than their competitors. For instance, FlexiSpy, from a company called Vervata, touts a spy software for mobile phones that enables a buyer secretly to record every SMS message, view its call history and more, for just under Euro 150'.

"This is the price we have to pay for smarter phones," says Anand Naik, director, systems engineering, Symantec India. "The more intelligent your mobile phone, the more vulnerabilities it comes with. Security is always inversely proportionate to functionality." What's most scary is that mobile phones have become a part of our lives. Adds Naik, "With the internet full of ads offering to turn these tiny gadgets into sophisticated bugging devices, there is nothing to stop these from falling into the hands of a stalker."says Naik.
